On February 8, 2023, Jindal Mahila College performed the play Tollugatti at the Sourabha 2023 State Level Inter-College Theatre Competition, directed by Shashikala N and written by T. P. Kailasam. Tollugatti (The Stubborn Idiot) is a satirical play that highlights the clash between tradition and progress, a recurring theme in Kailasam’s works. Known as the “father of Kannada humorous plays,” Kailasam used his wit to critique societal norms.

The story in Tollugatti revolves around a central character who stubbornly holds onto outdated beliefs despite the world changing around him. Through a series of comedic and reflective encounters, the play explores the consequences of rigid thinking and mocks the resistance to change. Kailasam’s humor serves not only to entertain but also to provoke thought, making this a powerful commentary on the necessity of embracing modernity while still respecting tradition.
