On February 9, 2023, The National College, Autonomous, Jayanagar performed the play Nayi Kathe at the Sourabha 2023 State Level Inter-College Theatre Competition, directed by Harish Rudraya and Karthik, and written by the acclaimed Kannada playwright Dr. Chandrashekhar Kambar. Like many of Kambar's works, Nayi Kathe is rich in North Karnataka’s folk traditions and dialect. The play delves into the life of the Dombi Daasa, a semi-nomadic community, and presents a deep exploration of the tension between love and materialism.
The story revolves around Naayee Maga (meaning "dog's son"), who serves his master with blind loyalty, refusing to even see himself as a human being. This loyalty is challenged by Shaari, who awakens feelings of self-worth and love within him, symbolizing the inner conflict between subjugation and personal freedom. The play also introduces characters like Somanna, a man intoxicated with power and wealth, and Savanthri, both of whom represent materialistic attitudes. Through these contrasting characters, the play critiques the social and economic hierarchies of the time, while reflecting on the broader human struggle between loyalty, oppression, and the search for dignity.
