On February 6, 2020, M S College performed the play Angulimala at the Sourabha 2020 State Level Intercollege Theatre Competition, directed by Jagadish Neenasam and written by Dr. Prabhushankar. The play is based on the powerful Buddhist story of Angulimala, originally known as Ahimsaka, a man who was manipulated into becoming a violent bandit. Under the misguided influence of his teacher, Angulimala was tasked with killing a thousand people and collecting their fingers. His terrifying journey led him to terrorize the region, wearing a garland of fingers from his victims.
As Angulimala sought his final victim to complete his gruesome task, he encountered the Buddha. Despite his efforts, Angulimala could not catch up to the Buddha. When he demanded that the Buddha stop, the Buddha responded, "I have stopped, Angulimala. It is you who have not stopped." This profound statement stirred Angulimala, leading him to reflect on his violent life. Overwhelmed with remorse, he renounced his ways and sought forgiveness, becoming a disciple of the Buddha.
Despite his past, Angulimala's journey of redemption was marked by intense repentance and spiritual growth. Through the Buddha's teachings, he embraced a life of compassion and non-violence, eventually achieving enlightenment. However, he had to endure the hostility of those who had suffered from his actions. His story is a profound example of the transformative power of compassion and forgiveness, showing that even the most hardened souls can find redemption through spiritual awakening
