On February 2, 2024, BMS College of Commerce and Management performed the play Sejuvan Nagarada Saadhvi at the Sourabha 2024 State Level Inter-College Theatre Competition, directed by Mahesh S Pallakki. The play is an adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's epic drama The Good Person of Szechwan, originally written between 1938 and 1940, with its first performance in 1943.
The story is set in Sichuan Province, China, and follows the protagonist, Shen Te, a poor but kind-hearted woman who is determined to lead a virtuous life despite the harsh realities of her environment. Shen Te constantly helps those around her, longs for love, and hopes for a better future for her child. However, the cruelty and selfishness of society make it nearly impossible for her to survive as a good person. To cope, she creates an alter ego, Shui Ta, a ruthless and pragmatic character who helps her navigate the brutal world. As Shen Te increasingly relies on this alter ego, the play raises a critical question: How can one remain good in a world that rewards selfishness?
Through this powerful narrative, Brecht—and by extension, Subbanna’s adaptation—encourages the audience to reflect on the moral challenges of society and the difficulty of maintaining integrity in a corrupt world.
