On February 2, 2024, CMS Jain University performed the play Rabdi at the Sourabha 2024 State Level Inter-College Theatre Competition, directed by Santhosh S and written by Dr. Hemalatha B S. The play, Rabdi, revolves around Saavantri, a mother of a mentally challenged child who struggles to provide a better future for her child. Saavantri faces societal challenges and financial difficulties but refuses to lose hope.
In her desperation, she offers to become a surrogate mother for an IT couple in exchange for the money needed to enroll her child in a special school. The play touches on themes of motherhood, love, and sacrifice, and delves into how far one is willing to go for their child’s well-being. It also raises questions about the ethics of surrogacy and the emotional toll it takes on mothers. Will Saavantri be able to part with the child she carried, or will her maternal instincts prevent her from fulfilling her agreement? This intense narrative explores the conflicts between aspirations, personal sacrifices, and the compromises individuals make in their lives.
