Waiting is an inevitable act in human life. In every possible way, waiting becomes a constant — waiting to be, to cease, to receive, or to be denied.

In this play, on one side, young women Madhavi and Kannagi yearn deeply, in the depths of their hearts, for Kovala, an elusive figure who exists only in their imaginations. Their longing for love reaches its peak, leading them to struggle with the harsh realities of life. On the other side, in a world that places no value on emotions, an aged courtesan displays cruelty by selling her body to survive, embodying a raw resilience.

Amidst such characters, there is a society that sustains itself through war, violence, and cruelty. In this way, Maatruka traverses all levels of life, posing the question — do we live for love, or merely for survival? The play offers an answer, shaped by the characters’ individual aspirations.

Written by the creative playwright H.S. Shivaprakash, Maatruka is being staged for the first time by Rangasourabha, marking a special milestone.
